HEALTHTIPS-DIET AND DENTAL HEALTH

Diet and Dental Health

The prevention of dental decay begins with cutting down the amount of sugars taken in all forms. Most people think we refer only to sweets as the culprits. But there are other dangerous sugar-containing foods as well

Some of them are:

1. All sugars (including honey)
2. Soft drinks such as colas and
   lemonades
3. Nearly all cereals
4. Cakes, biscuits and puddings.
5. Jam on your bread, marmalade on your toast.
6. Chocolates, sweets and toffees.
7. Peppermint sweets (they are the most dangerous because people believe the peppermint taste to be  ‘medicinal’. These sweets are almost pure sugar).
As has been shown already, both dental caries and periodontal disease are the result of bacterial action, in the plaque, which collects on the teeth and gums.

A chocolate candy bar of about 50 grams may contain the equivalent of ten teaspoons of sugar! A slice of two-layer chocolate cake may be the equivalent of fifteen teaspoons of sugar!

These sugars are not an essential part of a normal diet. Hence reducing the total intake, will not only benefit the teeth, but also the general health. However, it is the frequency of sugar intake, more than the total consumption, which is important in influencing tooth decay. It was shown that the acid formed on the tooth in seconds from sugar might take twenty minutes or more to disappear from the mouth. Thus, small sugary snacks every two or three hours throughout the day will keep the teeth bathed in a dangerous acid state.

If Children must have sweets, they should have them only once a day (preferably during meal time). But it is better to recommend sugar-free snacks. A good list would contain:

Fruits:          Apples, Oranges, Pears, Bananas
Vegetables: Carrots, Celery, Tomatoes, Lettuce, Cucumber, also Nuts, Crisps, Cheese (in cubes), Eggs, Milk, Yogurt.

In this way if we eliminate sugar, we reduce the formation of plaque by  depriving the bacteria of the food, from which they form the acid.

The damage by erosion that, say, lemon juice can do to the enamel will have to be seen to be believed, So avoid frequent tooth contact with lemons, grapefruit, vinegar and other strongly acid substances.

The chemist’s shop may also be a source of danger to the teeth, many cough and throat sweets, lozenges, syrups, and elixirs are loaded with sugar, sometimes up to 50-60 percent. This is to make the
product palatable.

HEALTH HEALTH AND FITNESS

HEALTH AND FITNESS                                         Health
Your health should be the number one priority in your life. Health is the general condition of a person in all aspects. It is also a level of functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism, often implicitly human. The physical environment is perhaps the most important factor that should be considered when classifying the health status of an individual. This includes factors such as clean water and air, safe houses, communities and roads all contribute to good health.
Jogging:
For heart health, the benefits of jogging is no need to be doubted. However, to reduce fat and weight, it is not effective. Why is hard to loose weight by jogging?
Here is an explanation of why a body remain fat despite jogging every day.
Constant movement during jogging including aerobic activity can strengthen the heart and respiratory muscles. The impact on health is that breathing becomes more healthy and cardiac pressure will go down so that the risk of hypertension decreases.
However, to burn fat, jogging is less effective. The body will only process the fat into energy if the calories needs obtained from sugar and carbohydrates are not sufficient.
One way to reduce fat is through exercise. Jogging is an exercise which requires lots of energy, so many people do it with the expectation of energy reserves in the form of fat will burned more efficiently. In fact, some people fail to lose weight despite jogging every day.
"The body is like the best machine that constantly adapts to anything. The more often you jog, the body will be more prepared for the next jog."
Jogging which is done frequently will only cause energy metabolism becomes more efficient. Adaptation which is performed by the body reduce the energy needed so not a lot of calories are burned.
Besides not being effective in loosing weight, jogging is also not good for your joints. When you jog, the joints will have to take 2.5 times the weight so vulnerable to injury.
The joints which are most prone to acute pain attack due to jogging, are the ankles and the knees. If often experience repeated pressure, these joints wear out faster.
Jogging is always considered as an exercise that can increase your metabolism and effective for weight loss.

To Improve Sleep:
1. Sprinkle just-washed sheets and pillowcases with lavender water. The scent has been shown in studies to promote relaxation, which can lead to better sleep.
2. Buy a new pillow. Katz says that studies show that pillows with an indent in the center can enhance sleep quality and reduce neck pain. Also, try a "cool" pillow -- one containing either all-natural fibers or a combination of sodium sulfate and ceramic fibers that help keep your head cool.
3. Eat a handful of walnuts before bed. You'll be giving yourself a boost of fiber and essential fatty acids along with the amino acid tryptophan -- a natural sleep-inducer.
To Improve Stress Control:
1. Give your partner a hug every day before work. Studies show this simple act can help you remain calm when chaos ensues during your day, Katz says.
2. Have a good cry. It can boost your immune system, reduce levels of stress hormones, eliminate depression, and help you think more clearly.
3. Twice a day, breathe deeply for three to five minutes
To Improve Nutrition:
1. Buy whole foods -- whether canned, frozen, or fresh from the farm -- and use them in place of processed foods whenever possible.
2. Reject foods and drinks made with corn syrup, a calorie-dense, nutritionally empty sweetener that many believe is worse for the body than sugar, says Katz.
3. Start each dinner with a mixed green salad. Not only will it help reduce your appetite for more caloric foods, but it also will automatically add veggies to your meal.
To Improve Physical Fitness:
1. Do a squat every time you pick something up. Instead of bending over in the usual way, which stresses the lower back, bend your knees and squat. This forces you to use your leg muscles and will build strength.
2. Every time you stop at a traffic light (or the bus does), tighten your thighs and butt muscles and release as many times as you can. (Don't worry, no one will see it!) This will firm leg and buttock muscles, improve blood flow -- and keep you mildly amused!
3. Whenever you're standing on a line, lift one foot a half-inch off the ground. The extra stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh, plus your buttocks, will help firm and tone muscles. Switch feet every few minutes.
"Many people feel relaxed and comfortable when they go out and merge with nature."
"But not many know that scientific studies prove the healing effects of nature."
Forests, as well as other green natural places, can reduce stress, improve mood, reduce anger and aggressiveness, and increase joy. Trips to the forest can also strengthen our immune system by increasing the activity and damage cancer cells

Our health tips are designed to address common health issues faced by millions of Americans. There is nothing better than being in great health or good health. We’re here to show you the path to living well. Your mission if you choose to accept it, is to live a stress free life filled with zest, energy, vim and vigor.
Remember the song by Olivia Newton John, “Let’s Get Physical” It goes something like this…
Let's get physical, physical, I wanna get physical, let's get into physical. Let me hear your body talk, Your body talk, let me hear your body talk…
Guess what? It hasn’t gone out of style! We’re singing that same tune! Let’s get physical! Are you ready? Here’s to your health!
How To Stop Smoking For Good
The clock is ticking; the health clock that is. If you are a smoker, then you know the risks you are taking with every puff. If you are around non-smokers such as a spouse, child or other loved ones, then you know how dangerous your second hand smoke is on their bodies.
The good news is; you can stop smoking and do it for good! It will take will power and fortitude. It may also take looking at the various paths to breaking the nicotine addiction but the effort will be well worth it.
Here’s a powerful help tip; you need to know that not everyone breaks the power of this addictive    habit the same way.
Your path may be different than the next but the end result is what counts! What path will you take? Are you just going to go cold turkey? Are you going to use a stop smoking patch?
How about one of those fake cigarettes designed to wean one off of the nicotine fix. Are you going to seek a spiritual path such as prayer and maybe fasting? The path to take is first getting to know all of your options and determining from that knowledge base which one is best for you.
How To Lose Weight And Keep It        Off                                                                                                                                 Losing weight has literally become an American pastime. Very few Americans are not fighting the battle of the bulge. So how does one out the weight off and keep it off? An even more important question is, “Can a overweight person put the weight off and keep it off?” The answer is a definite “Yes!”
The key is not losing faith and giving up when you see others who can’t seem to win when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off. I remember seeing clips from Kirstie Alley's new reality show, “Big Life.”
It’s a comical reality show documenting Kirstie Alley's efforts to lose weight. Judging by some of the  sarcastic comments people have made about Kirstie, their belief is she’ll never lose the weight but I’m a believer! I believe she can do it and so can you!
The key to losing weight and keeping it off is the same as the process of dealing with any addiction; that is learning about the various paths to freedom… and then taking the one that best suits you.
Just so you know, there is no best way to lose weight and there is no best way to keeping the fact off. The trick is finding what works for you. Start by making healthier food choices, drinking water and of course exercising. Sound simple, aye? That’s because it is!
                                                                                                                                                                  Addicted To Sweets No More
Does this sound familiar? Honey buns and hot chocolate laced with sugar in the morning, followed by a Snickers candy bar and Peanut M&Ms at break. Then, after lunch you grab a Kit Kat bar, and a couple of Reece’s Peanut Butter cups.
On the drive home, you’re thinking about that delicious Haagen Daz butter pecan ice cream in your freezer. You can’t wait till you’re done with dinner so that you can taste that sweet frozen treat.
Most of us have been there! That’s how the companies want you to be; addicted to their scrumptious delicacies. I’ll never forget the day I shunned candy for good.
That was almost twenty years ago and my teeth, gums and overall health is thanking me immensely everyday. In our health tips, we’re going to show you how to beat the sweet tooth at it’s own game!

HEALTH TIPS - MENTAL FITNESS

MENTAL FITNESS TIPS                                                                                                                                                        Think about your emotional well-being. Assess your emotional health regularly. Consider the particular demands or stresses you are facing and how they are affecting you.
Give yourself permission to take a break from your worries and concerns. Recognize that dedicating even a short time every day to your mental fitness will reap significant benefits in terms of feeling rejuvenated and more confident.
Here are some simple ways to practice mental fitness:
Daydream – Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a dream location. Breathe slowly and deeply. Whether it’s a beach, a mountaintop, a hushed forest or a favourite room from your past, let the comforting environment wrap you in a sensation of peace and tranquility.
“Collect” positive emotional moments  Make it a point to recall times when you have experienced pleasure, comfort, tenderness, confidence, or other positive emotions.
Learn ways to cope with negative thoughts – Negative thoughts can be insistent and loud. Learn to interrupt them. Don’t try to block them (that never works), but don’t let them take over. Try distracting yourself or comforting yourself, if you can’t solve the problem right away.
Do one thing at a time  For example, when you are out for a walk or spending time with friends, turn off your cell phone and stop making that mental “to do” list.  Take in all the sights, sounds and smells you encounter.
Exercise – Regular physical activity improves psychological well-being and can reduce depression and anxiety. Joining an exercise group or a gym can also reduce loneliness, since it connects you with a new set of people sharing a common goal.
Enjoy hobbies -      Taking up a hobby brings balance to your life by allowing you to do something you enjoy because you want to do it, free of the pressure of everyday tasks.  It also keeps your brain active.
Set personal goals  Goals don’t have to be ambitious. You might decide to finish that book you started three years ago; to take a walk around the block every day; to learn to knit or play bridge; to call your friends instead of waiting for the phone to ring. Whatever goal you set, reaching it will build confidence and a sense of satisfaction.
Keep a journal (or even talk to the wall!) – Expressing yourself after a stressful day can help you gain perspective, release tension and even boost your body’s resistance to illness.
Share humour Life often gets too serious, so when you hear or see something that makes you smile or laugh, share it with someone you know. A little humour can go a long way to keeping us mentally fit!
Volunteer – Volunteering is called the “win-win” activity because helping others makes us feel good about ourselves. At the same time, it widens our social network, provides us with new learning experiences and can bring balance to our lives.
Treat yourself well – Cook yourself a good meal. Have a bubble bath. See a movie. Call a friend or relative you haven’t talked to in ages. Sit on a park bench and breathe in the fragrance of flowers and grass. Whatever it is, do it just for you.T

HEALTH TIPS-HEALTHY FOOD FOR KIDS

HEALTHY FOOD FOR KIDS                                                                                                                   We all know that making healthy food for kids is only half the job.
Getting it into the kid is a whole different story, and can be really challenging, frustrating, and worrisome at times.

Here is a list of feeding techniques worth trying. You might hit upon something that works for your little one:
Make a "snack tray": Most of our kids are too busy to stop to eat, or even go to the bathroom. They also eat like birds. So, feed them like birds! Leave out a snack tray for your little grazers to come eat from. Shredded carrots, frozen peas, shredded cheese, and organic sprouted bread (you can cut bread into fun shapes or even use cookie cutters to make little bread creatures) are all great choices. Healthy food for kids that can be served as finger food makes an ideal snack tray for grazing.

I have found these fabulous bento style lunchboxes that make perfect grazing trays. You can simply pop them back into the fridge when the grazing slows down, and take them back out later for more snacks. These Easy Lunch Boxes are sturdier than the reusable/disposable ones you find at the store, and they don't warp in the dishwasher. They are FREE of BPA, PVC, phthalates, and lead, and have cooler bags made to fit them perfectly! (These are also obviously ideal for school lunches, and even family picnics - each cooler holds three of the bento boxes.)
  1. Repeated exposure: At every meal, put small amounts of what you're cooking for everyone else on his plate, along with a serving of something he is more likely to eat. By repetition and consistency, you are modeling healthy eating habits and showing your child that well-balanced meals are "normal". *This is a slow process, so just be zen about it and keep on going. Eventually, you will be to a point where "healthy food for kids" is one and same as "healthy food for adults". How freeing to cook one meal for the whole family!
  2. Repeated exposure: Take your child to the local farmer's market with you, and have him help you select food for your family. Talk about where the food comes, who in your family likes the different fruits and vegetables - you can even check with the farmers about coming by the actual farm at some point. Talk about exciting for your kids! This is a great thing about getting a CSA box; it introduces your child to the concept of farm fresh food in a very natural, matter of fact way.
  3. Allow "proportional" amounts of dessert: This applies to slightly older kids, once reason and rational thought are available. Basically, if 1/2 the dinner is eaten, then a 1/2-sized portion of dessert is given. I do this with my daughter, and it works beautifully. My goal is for her to learn her own body's needs, and not to overeat or over stuff in order to get dessert. I do not want her to "clean her plate" if that is more food than she needs. I also don't want her to skip her meal and eat a huge dessert. The "proportional rule" addresses both those issues and hits a happy medium for our family. Healthy food for kids can certainly include dessert, as long as things stay in balance.
  4. Peer pressure: Get together for "lunch dates" with kids who eat well. This introduces an atmosphere of light peer pressure and is also a fun social occasion for you and your children. Eating can be a very social activity, so capitalize on that by surrounding your child with others eating healthy food for kids, and friends whose families put healthy eating high on their priority lists.
  5. Cook together: Have your child cook the food with you, then serve it. (There are some fun recipes for children on that page.) When he helps make healthy food for kids, he will then be more interested in eating it, and will also feel proud and accomplished. Try incorporating a few "cooking dates" with your kid each week, and see what happens.
  6. Silly shapes: Try making food in silly shapes! Healthy food for kids can be as crazy and funny as you want it to be! I like cutting food up with a cookie cutter (dino, bear, princess, ballerina) or use baking pans that make cute shapes (I have a William Sonoma pan that makes tiny carrots, peas, cabbages, and radishes and I use that to make healthed-up banana bread bites). The novelty of the shapes seems to change the child's way of thinking about the food item. A slice of banana bread would not interest my three year old, but a funny little carrot-shaped muffin made with the same batter would certainly get picked up, played with, and most probably tasted and eaten. You can be even sillier and give your child rabbit ears to wear, while serving a plate with shredded carrots, frozen peas, and banana bread carrots, for example.
  7. Build those appetites: Try a long, fun hike with a packed picnic. Your kids will eat when hungry enough, and there's nothing like mountain hiking to build a great appetite. A day at the beach will also do the trick. So cap off a big adventure day with a smorgasbord of healthy food for kids! This can be a good time to try slightly more adventurous foods, like a tomato/mozzarella salad or veggie "sushi". Plus, Build those appetites: Try a long, fun hike with a packed picnic. HEALTH TIPS- YOGA AND FITNESS

YOGA AND FITNESS

During the past few years the image of yoga has changed gradually. While in earlier days, when one would think about the term yoga one would think of a group of people in white, sometimes standing on their heads and at other times doing strong breathing. Now, since there is a change in the image and more number of socially known people of the society including celebrities have started giving importance to fitness and yoga, we think of well shaped figures of the icons we fantasize of.
If you want to remain fit by practicing yoga you need to the basic types of it. Yoga, since it is very ancient, most of the types contain the same old postures. What varies from one type to the other is the point of focus. The various reasons for which people practice yoga vary. While some want to increase the strength of the body other may want to increase the flexibility. Depending on these requirements the various types of yoga change their focus. Some of the yoga types also focus mainly on breathing, relaxation and meditation to have fitness thru yoga.
Specifically talking about the west, most of their yoga styles, followed by the people believing in fitness and yoga, have been derived from a type of yoga called Hatha yoga. Being a general term, Hatha yoga actually refers to one of the branches of ancient philosophy of India. The Hatha yoga uses a combination of moral discipline and physical exercises to help people achieve control and maintain balance between mind and body. The hatha yoga includes many aspects of yoga like postures called asanas, breathing and meditation. However the people in the west were able to adopt only the physical parts and could not practice the moral disciplines and even the breathing and meditation. Since each yoga style is meant to focus on different aspects, without following all the basic principles of hatha yoga it is not possible to attain the mental balance just by practicing physical exercises. One of the styles of yoga is called Asthanga yoga. Those who believe that fitness and yoga are to increase strength, stamina and flexibility of the body should practice Asthanga yoga. However this style is not recommended for beginners because the participants are required to jump from one asana to other. Also if they find it very demanding, the difficult level might discourage them. For those who are not new to yoga and want to concentrate on increasing strength, flexibility and stamina, Asthanga yoga is the best option. They should however be ready for one hour of jumping from one posture to another.
One of the American developments of Ashtanga yoga is also called power yoga. This yoga also contains some parts from outside Ashtanga yoga as well. Power yoga is said to be good for athletes.
